Meanwhile, the iCar 03 is a boxy electric SUV aimed at younger buyers. However, in right-hand-drive markets it is sold as the Jaecoo J6.
What Is Chery Automobile?
First of all, Chery was set up by the city of Wuhu in Anhui province in 1997. Its first car, the Fengyun, went on sale in 1999, and then in 2001 Chery exported its first cars, ten sedans for Syria. After that, the small QQ followed in 2003, and in 2007 Chery became the first Chinese carmaker to build one million cars.
Later, Chery formed a joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover in 2012, and it added new brands such as Exeed in 2017 and Jetour in 2018. Then, in 2023, it launched Omoda and Jaecoo for export, iCar for younger buyers and Luxeed with Huawei. Chery Automobile then listed in Hong Kong in September 2025.
Today Chery Automobile sells cars in more than 120 countries, and its group sold a record 2,806,393 vehicles in 2025. In addition, nearly half of its sales come from exports, while it builds cars in Brazil, Spain and other countries.

Chery Automobile grew from a city-backed start-up into one of China’s largest carmakers in under 30 years.
- 1997 First, Chery is founded in Wuhu, Anhui.

Chery Fengyun
First Chery Sedan
The Fengyun, also called the Windcloud, was Chery’s first car. It was based on the body of an early SEAT Toledo, while it used a Ford-designed engine.

Chery QQ

Later, the QQ was a cheap, cheerful city car that became a hit in China. In fact, Chery revived the QQ name in 2025.

The first Tiggo started Chery’s SUV range. Today the Tiggo name covers some of its best-selling export models.

First Jetour
The X70 launched the Jetour brand in 2018. Since then, Jetour has grown into Chery’s second-largest brand.

Electric Huawei partnership
Eventually, the S7 became the first Luxeed, developed with Huawei’s car technology. As a result, it brought Chery into the premium electric market.
