What Is Tata Motors?
In fact, Tata Motors was founded in 1945 as part of the Tata Group, and for decades it was best known for trucks and buses. Its first passenger vehicle, the Sierra SUV, arrived in 1991, and then the Indica of 1998 became India’s first car designed and built in the country.
Then, in 2008, Tata launched the Nano, sold at 1 lakh rupees, and it bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford. Later, the Nexon became the first Indian-made car to score five stars in Global NCAP crash tests, and the Nexon EV of 2020 made Tata India’s leading electric car maker.
However, in October 2025 Tata Motors split in two. As a result, the listed company that keeps cars, electric cars and JLR became Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, while the truck business became a separate company. In addition, Tata sold a record 642,000 cars in the 2026 financial year.
