The Ora 5 relaunched the Ora brand in December 2025, and it is offered with several powertrains. As a result, Ora sales more than doubled in August 2026.

What Is Great Wall Motor?

Great Wall Motor grew out of a vehicle repair shop in Baoding, and the company was founded in 1984. In 1996 it launched the Deer pickup, and since 1998 it has been China’s best-selling pickup maker. Later, it listed in Hong Kong in 2003 and in Shanghai in 2011.

The Haval H6, launched in 2011, made GWM a major SUV maker, and Haval became a separate brand in 2013. After that, GWM added the premium Wey brand in 2017, Ora electric cars in 2018 and Tank off-roaders in 2021.

Today Great Wall Motor sells cars in more than 170 countries and regions, and it sold a record 1,323,672 vehicles in 2025. In addition, it builds cars in Russia, Thailand and Brazil, while overseas sales passed half of its total in 2026.

Great Wall Motor History

Great Wall Motor has grown from a pickup specialist into one of China’s biggest carmakers.

  1. 1984 First, Great Wall Motor is founded in Baoding.
  2. 1996 Then the Deer pickup is launched.
  3. 1998 GWM becomes China’s top pickup maker, a title it still holds.
  4. 2003 Next, GWM lists on the Hong Kong stock exchange.
  5. 2005 The Hover SUV is launched.
  6. 2011 The Haval H6 goes on sale, and GWM lists in Shanghai.
  7. 2012 Meanwhile, GWM finishes sixth in the Dakar Rally.
  8. 2013 Haval becomes a separate brand.
  9. 2017 The premium Wey brand is launched, and Ora follows in 2018.
  10. 2019 GWM opens its factory in Tula, Russia.
  11. 2021 Later, the Tank brand is launched, and the Rayong plant in Thailand opens.
  12. 2025 GWM opens its plant in Brazil and sells a record 1.32 million vehicles.
  13. 2026 Finally, cumulative sales pass 17 million.

Meanwhile, the Good Cat, sold abroad as the Ora 03 and Funky Cat, was Ora’s best-known electric car. However, it was dropped in the UK in 2026.

The Tank 300 first appeared as a Wey model in 2020. After that, its success led GWM to create the Tank brand in 2021, and a new version went on presale in 2026.
