What Is UAZ?
UAZ stands for Ulyanovsky Avtomobilny Zavod, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. It started in 1941, when part of the ZIS plant was evacuated from Moscow to Ulyanovsk. Then the first ZIS-5V trucks came off the line in May 1942.
Later, UAZ took over the GAZ-69 from GAZ, and in 1958 it launched its own UAZ-450 van. As a result, the UAZ-452 of 1965 and the UAZ-469 of 1972 became the vehicles you still see across the former Soviet Union.
Since 2000, the plant has belonged to the group now called Sollers. Meanwhile, UAZ vehicles have stayed old-school: separate frames, solid axles and low-range gearboxes. That makes them cheap to fix, although they’re short on comfort and refinement.
