What Are VinFast cars?
VinFast was founded in 2017 by Vingroup, the company of billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong. At first, its cars, the Lux A2.0 sedan and Lux SA2.0 SUV, used BMW engines and platforms under licence, and they were shown at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.
Then, in 2022, VinFast stopped making gas-powered cars and became an electric-only brand. After that, it listed on the Nasdaq in August 2023, and it was briefly valued at about US$191 billion. Meanwhile, it began selling cars in the US, India, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Today VinFast cars are Vietnam’s best-selling brand, with about 29% of the market in 2025. However, the company still makes large losses, and it depends on funding from Vingroup and Pham Nhat Vuong.
