What Is BYD Auto?

BYD Auto is the car-making arm of BYD Company, a Chinese group based in Shenzhen. Wang Chuanfu, a chemist, founded BYD on 10 February 1995 to make rechargeable batteries, and it soon became a major supplier of phone batteries. Then in 2003 BYD bought Xi’an Qinchuan Automobile, so it could start building cars.

At first BYD made low-priced gas cars such as the F3. Meanwhile, it used its battery know-how to launch the F3DM plug-in hybrid in 2008 and the e6 electric car soon after. That same year, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway bought about 10% of the company, which brought BYD worldwide attention. In March 2022 it finally stopped building gas-only cars.

Today BYD Auto sells electric and plug-in hybrid cars across Europe, Asia, Latin America and Australia, as well as through its premium brands Denza, Fangchengbao and Yangwang. It sold about 4.6 million vehicles in 2025, so it passed Tesla to become the world’s biggest seller of electric cars. However, sales in China have fallen in 2026, while exports and overseas factories are growing fast.
