Fox-Body Mustang: 1979–1993 Guide

1986 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 notchback coupe, Fox-body generation

The Fox-body Mustang is the third-generation Ford Mustang, sold for the 1979 to 1993 model years. It started out as a sensible, lighter car for a fuel-conscious era, then turned into the cheap 5.0 V8 hot rod a whole generation grew up with. Here's how it changed, what to check and why fans still love it.

What Made the Fox-Body Mustang Different

After the small Mustang II, Ford moved the Mustang to its Fox platform, the same one under the Ford Fairmont. The result was lighter, roomier and much more modern-looking, with clean, boxy lines.

For the first few years, power was weak because of emissions rules. However, the 5.0 HO V8 came back in 1982 and kept getting stronger, so by 1987 it made 225 hp in a car that weighed very little.

That mix of low weight, a torquey V8 and a low price made the Fox body a drag strip favorite. In addition, it looks like a plain commuter car, so it's become a classic sleeper.

Fox-Body Mustang Engines and Power

The Fox-body Mustang offered more engines than any Mustang before or since, from an 85-hp six to a turbo four. For most buyers today, though, it's all about the 5.0.

One big restyle in 1987

Fox-Body Mustang Changes by Model Year

Fans split the Fox body into early four-eye cars (1979 to 1986) and the aero-nose cars from 1987 on. The 5.0 got stronger almost every year until 1987.

  1. 1979 Launch on the Fox platform, with coupe and hatchback bodies.
  2. 1982 The 5.0 HO V8 returns in the new GT with 157 hp.
  3. 1983 A convertible is back for the first time since 1973.
  4. 1984 The turbocharged SVO arrives from Ford's Special Vehicle Operations team.
  5. 1986 The 5.0 gets fuel injection, and the SVO ends after 9,844 were built.
  6. 1987 Big restyle with a flush-headlight aero nose and new dash, while the 5.0 reaches 225 hp.
  7. 1993 The first SVT Cobra and 107 stripped-out Cobra R race cars close out the generation.

Our verdict: the 1987 to 1993 5.0 cars are the ones most people want, because they combine fuel injection, 225 hp (205 hp in 1992 and 1993) and the later styling.

Fox-Body Mustang Recalls

Fox-body Mustang recall campaigns are more than 30 years old, so they matter far less than the car's condition today. Still, you can run the VIN through NHTSA to see whether anything was left open.

Fox-Body Mustang Safety Ratings by Region

Don't expect modern safety from a Fox body. Most were built before airbags were common, and they were designed long before today's crash tests existed.

RegionProgramRatingWhat it means
United StatesNHTSAOld tests onlyEarly frontal tests from this era used a very different method, so they can't be compared with modern star ratings.
United StatesIIHSNot testedIIHS has no crash ratings for this generation.
Europe, AustraliaEuro NCAP, ANCAPNot ratedThese programs started long after the Fox body ended.
Ratings apply only to the body style and model years tested, and older scores are not comparable with today's tests.

Treat it like a classic. Good tires, sorted brakes and modern seat belts in good shape are the best safety upgrades you can make to a Fox body.

Buying a Used Fox-Body Mustang

Fox bodies are cheap to buy and easy to fix, but most have lived a hard life. A clean, unmodified one is worth paying extra for.

  • Torque boxes. The rear control arms stress these mounts, so they can crack and tear. Repairs are costly, and bad damage may not be fixable.
  • Strut towers and rust. Check where the strut tower meets the frame rail, plus the doors, rockers, quarter panels, floors and hatch edges.
  • Oil leaks on the 5.0. Rear main seal leaks are common, so look under the car.
  • Modifications. Most have been changed. Make sure the mods match what you want, and check the quality of the work.
