What Is Lucid Motors?
Lucid began in 2007 as Atieva, a battery company founded by Bernard Tse, Sam Weng and Sheaupyng Lin. Then it renamed itself Lucid Motors in 2016 and showed the Air the same year. After that, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund invested $1 billion in 2019 and became the majority owner.
Production of the Air started in Casa Grande, Arizona, in 2021, and the first cars went to buyers that October. Later, Lucid opened a second plant in Saudi Arabia in 2023, which was the country’s first car plant. In addition, the Gravity SUV went into production in late 2024.
Lucid still loses a lot of money, and its net loss was $2.7 billion in 2025. As a result, it cut jobs in 2026 and delayed its cheaper midsize model to 2027. However, Uber has invested $500 million and plans to use Lucid robotaxis, while the Saudi fund keeps adding money.
