What Are Peugeot cars?
Peugeot cars come from one of the oldest family businesses in France. In 1810 the Peugeot family turned a mill in Valentigney into a steel foundry, and then it made saws, tools and coffee mills. In 1858 it registered its lion trademark, which still appears on every Peugeot today.
Armand Peugeot built the family’s first cars around 1890, and in 1896 he founded the Société des Automobiles Peugeot. Later, Peugeot won the Indianapolis 500 three times, while in 1976 it took over Citroën to form PSA. The 205 of 1983 then became one of Europe’s best-loved cars.
Today Peugeot cars are built by Stellantis, the group formed in 2021 when PSA merged with Fiat Chrysler. The 208 and 2008 were both among Europe’s ten best-selling cars in 2025, while the Peugeot family still owns about 7.7% of Stellantis. However, Peugeot has not sold cars in the US since 1991.
